Description
You go to the Castle District on the Buda (west) side of Budapest as much to see the Palace and Matthias Church as to spend time just drinking in the view of the Pest (east) side. And believe me, you can spend alot of time on the view! Buda and the Castle District are hilly but on the east side of the Danube River in Pest, the land flattens so you have a fabulous view from the palace. The Szechenyi Chain Bridge is one of the characteristic bridges spanning the River Danube between Buda and Pest and a popular attraction in its own right. The walk across the Danube is short enough that many just walk across...maybe for the view, maybe for the experience, maybe because it might even be faster in rush hour! The Chain Bridge is anchored on the Pest side of the river to Szechenyi (formerly Roosevelt) Square, adjacent to the Gresham Palace, a fine example of Secession (or Art Nouveau) architecture, and now a Four Seasons Hotel. Behind that you see St Stephens Basilica, a Roman Catholic basilica named in honor of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975-1038), whose right hand is housed in the reliquary. It was the sixth largest church building in Hungary before 1920. Today, it is the third largest church building in present-day Hungary. The climb up the dome there also provides some great views.
