Description
Lifebuoy was the world's first deodorant soap. Its original name was Lifebuoy Royal Disinfectant Soap. The brand was launched in 1894 in the United Kingdom as an affordable alternate to other products available at that time. Lifebuoy was considered to be soap suitable for the entire family. Its original color was a bright red, and it had a very distinctive fragrance, almost medicinal, which came to be the product's main trademark.
Throughout its 110 year plus history, Lifebuoy has always marketed itself as a soap which will guard a person's health through good hygiene. In the 1930s, their ad campaign was titled "Clean hands help guard health" and it encouraged the use of Lifebuoy in a hand washing program to kill germs that can cause sickness and disease. A similar educational campaign continues today in countries including India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
People became increasingly interested in products to boost self-confidence so Lifebuoy developed a campaign which focused not just on fighting germs and keeping clean but on preventing “body odor”; they were the first to coin the phrase “B.O.”.
Though it is no longer available in brick and mortar stores in the United States, it can be purchased online at the Vermont Country Store. Today, Lifebuoy is mainly sold in Asia and parts of Africa by Unilever and its subsidiaries. It is top seller in every Asian market where it is sold.
