Description
OAK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
CASWELL BEACH, ATLANTIC OCEAN
OAK ISLAND, NC
Built of reinforced concrete in 1958, this is one of the souths most interesting construction. A form was used and concrete poured in the form. When the concrete was dry, the form was raised and another section was poured until the entire height of 169 feet was completed.
Originally in this location, the entrance to the famed Cape Fear River, two range lights were employed. The taller light was constructed on a tram railway so that it could be moved as the bar marking the river entrance shifted.
From Wilmington, NC the traveler must head south to route 133. Taking that route to its terminus and turning left....the light is a number of miles along the beach on the left side of the road.
